O estúdio realizado na Universidade de Hong Kong no programa de mestrado contou com uma oportunidade singular de combinar diferentes experiências arquitetônicas e culturais acerca do desenho da sombra. Sombra, ou penumbra, o simples ato de bloquear ou diminuir a luz leva consigo uma bonita complexidade quando entendido para além das relações funcionais.

Na tentativa de aprofundar o estudo acerca do tema os alunos realizaram uma pesquisa que partiu em duas diferentes direções. A primeira relacionada a materiais de fácil obtenção em lojas locais, de custo reduzido e de fácil manipulação. O segundo a utilização da sombra no espaço público de Hong Kong, mais especificamente nos Dai Pai Dong - barraca de comida ao ar livre - suas variações e interações com o público.

Dois conjuntos estruturais em ripas de madeira com fundações expostas tracionam as 4 diferentes camadas de tecido que flutuam sobre o gramado em um vão livre de 12 metros. Por meio de um mecanismo simples em roldana se faz possível a mudança de geometria da cobertura e consequentemente uma distinta sombra é formada.

A study at a University of Hong Kong Master’s degree program provided a unique opportunity to combine different cultural and architectural experiences concerned with drawing shadows. Shadow or penumbra, the simple act of blocking or sifting light, can involve a beautiful degree of complexity if it is taken beyond its functional relationships.

Delving further into the study of this issue, the students conducted their research from an initial starting point, which branched out in two directions. The first one focused on low cost, easily handled materials that are readily available in local shops. The second one focused on the use of shade in Hong Kong’s public spaces, in particular its Dai Pai Dong or open-air food stalls, analyzing their variants and their interactions with the public.

Two sets of structural wooden slats with surface footings tauten the four layers of cloth that float above the grass, with a a 12 metre free span. The geometry of the canopy and consequently the shadow that it casts can be changed by means of a simple pulley mechanism.
